  13. RemGuard is a Newton MessagePad utitlity that helps prevent missed
  14. appointment reminders posted by the MessagePad Dates application.

  16. **Background

  18. The MessagePad keeps track of the last four system messages, called
  19. notifications. These notifications include things like battery low
  20. messages, errors, ...and reminders from the Dates applicataion.  
  21.  
  22. If a Dates reminder comes due, the MessagePad will turn itself on,
  23. if neccessary, and display the reminder in a small window.  If you
  24. are not there to see it, however, and the MessagePad turns itself
  25. off, you will miss the reminder.  The next time you turn the
  26. MessagePad on, the MessagePad's reminder window will be closed.
  27. RemGuard makes sure you don't miss reminders.

  29. **Installation

  31. Install the package as described in the Apple documentation.

  33. **Operation

  35. Tap the RemGuard icon in the Extras Drawer.  Any reminders (up to
  36. four) in the MessagePad's notification list will be displayed in
  37. the RemGuard window.  There are two ways to dismiss the RemGuard
  38. window:

  40. "Acknowledge" - marks reminders in the window as read; these
  41. reminders will not be displayed again.
  42.  
  43. "Snooze" - hides the RemGuard window for 5 minutes or until you
  44. turn Newton off and back on again, whichever occurs first.  Use this
  45. if you don't have time to read the reminders at that time.

  47. Notice that when RemGuard is on, its icon in the Extras Drawer will
  48. appear with a check over the clock.  Tapping the icon will toggle
  49. RemGuard on and off.

  51. **Notes

  53. RemGuard can't tell whether or not you saw a Dates-posted reminder
  54. when it appeared so you may see reminders in the RemGuard window
  55. after you have seen the MessagePad display them. Once you
  56. acknowledge a reminder, however, RemGuard will not show it again.

  58. I speculate that future versions of the MessagePad system software
  59. may make RemGuard unnecessary.  If reminders on future Newtons are harder
  60. to miss, remove the RemGuard package.  For now, however, I hope
  61. you find this utility useful.
